BUILDING: WILDERNESS TREKS
About Bhutan:

Half the size of Indiana, the Kingdom of Bhutan is nestled deep on the southeast slope of great Himalayas. It is bordered on the north and east by Tibet and on the south and west by India. Some of the highest mountains in the world mark its northern border with Tibet. The lowest point in the country is 250m, in the south, rising to the maximum elevation of 7,450m in the north.
Often referred to as the Last Shangri -La on earth and the Land of the Thunder Dragon (Druk Yul) , this tiny Kingdom is an exotic land of high mountains, lush valleys and pristine ecology. Occupying an area of 47,000 (sq km) the country is sparsely populated by six hundred thousand people of Tibetan, Indo-Mongloid, Aboriginal and Nepalese origins and is also the last surviving Mahayana Buddhist state. Opened for tourism only in 1974, Bhutan has three regions that are open to the visitors (western, central and Eastern) which are distinctly different from each other due to the prominent north south mountain ranges that separate each area resulting in different topographical features.
Largely isolated from the rest of the world by its remote location the kingdom retains many a mysterious preserve that is well worth the journey. With 72 percent of the country under forest cover, the thunder dragon is a trekker's paradise and an environmentalist's dream. Many parts of the country have been declared wildlife reserves, and are the natural habitats of rare species of both flora and fauna. Nowhere in the Himalayas is the natural heritage more rich and varied than in Bhutan which still retains all the charm of the old world, and travelers experience the full glory of this ancient land as embodied in the monastic fortresses, ancient temples, monasteries and stupas which dot the countryside.
